We accept skaters from any level of skating starting from 14 years of age. Because our teams are primarily adult players; those under 18 wanting to play on an adult team need a parent or guardian's consent.
Yes, we skate USARS ruleset and have insurance through them also. Their fiscal season is September through August. Cost is $85/season. It gets prorated if you join mid-end season. Every skater will be required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, a mouthguard and quad skates (not roller blades). For the purpose of insurance, you will be required to sign a waiver when you first skate with us, once you join you will have a few more pieces of paperwork you have to sign and then everyone is safe & ready to play roller derby. Please check our Sponsor page to view local derby supply places where you can get all your gear.
Yes, for tryouts you will sign a waiver. Once a member you are required to get skater's insurance ($65/year) through USA Roller Sports (USARS).
Yes, Roller derby is a big commitment. You'll be expected to attend league practices for around two hours twice a week in addition to team practices and fundraisers. We are a skater owned & run roller derby league, so we also require you to work on a committeee and attend meetings to remain an active member. We're not telling you this to scare you, but we want to be honest: If the time commitment is too much, maybe being a skater isn't the right fit for you right now. Despite the time commitment, any skater will tell you that it is completely worth it and you instantly have over 80 sisters & contacts in Arizona plus over 25,000 worldwide derby girls and it keeps growing.
If you are just starting out, New Blood practices twice a week (Sunday & Tuesday evenings) and then you need to go and skate on your own to build up your skating abilities. The Bootcamp is only 12 weeks and sometimes skating twice a week ISN"T enough for you to catch up to the rest of the group if you are a beginning skater.
If you are on a team you practice 3X-5X a week that includes with the league and with your team. A lot of the skaters do extra skating outside regular practices and you can always join them - they will post it on our private league message board.
We always welcome volunteers for bout set up & take down. NSO (non-skating officials) are always needed to help with the stats, production and special events/bouts when travel teams skate. Please firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know your interested.
